JCI Accreditation Process at Bahçeşehir Dental Hospital: A New Step Towards International Quality Standards
General
14 Sept 2026

Quality in healthcare services is addressed through patient safety, management of clinical processes, employee responsibilities, and the execution of practices within the institution in line with specific standards. The initiation of work towards the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation process by Bahçeşehir University Oral and Dental Health Hospital also constitutes a new phase aimed at evaluating the hospital's approach to quality and patient safety against international benchmarks.
JCI evaluates practices across the entire institution based on specific standards in the accreditation of healthcare organisations. In the eighth edition of the current JCI Hospital Accreditation Standards, the criteria are organised under headings including requirements for participation in accreditation, patient-centred standards, standards related to the management of the healthcare organisation, and standards aimed at the impact on health. The standards also feature measurable requirements for areas such as patient safety, infection prevention and control, health technologies, facility safety, and quality improvement.
The accreditation approach does not merely look at the existence of written procedures. In the evaluation process, JCI examines how standards are implemented throughout the institution, utilizing interviews conducted with managers, healthcare professionals, patients, and patients' relatives, as well as observations in patient care areas and the evaluation of required documents. The accreditation decision is also shaped by the organisation's overall level of compliance with the relevant standards.
Bahçeşehir University Oral and Dental Health Hospital began providing services in Balmumcu in May 2023. Spanning an indoor area of 15,000 square metres, the hospital features 181 dental units, two general anaesthesia theatres, a sedation unit, multidisciplinary dentistry clinics, and prosthetic production laboratories. The hospital also serves as the centre where the academic and clinical activities of the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Dentistry are conducted.
Considering the comprehensive nature of JCI standards covering the entire institution, the process requires the joint evaluation of numerous areas ranging from clinical practices to patient safety, infection control to the use of health technologies, and management processes. Dental hospitals can also be classified among the specialised healthcare organisations within the scope of eligibility criteria defined for JCI hospital accreditation.
The efforts of Bahçeşehir University Oral and Dental Health Hospital towards the JCI process constitute a comprehensive field of study aimed at evaluating the institution's existing clinical and academic infrastructure in line with international quality benchmarks. The focus of the process lies in reflecting the standards onto daily healthcare services rather than merely defining them, monitoring practices, and making the quality improvement approach sustainable throughout the institution.
Entry into the JCI accreditation process represents a preparation and evaluation phase distinct from the final accreditation outcome. Therefore, for Bahçeşehir University Oral and Dental Health Hospital, the process signifies a new step in terms of comparing the quality and safety dimensions of healthcare services with international standards and developing institutional practices within this framework.
