The Role of the Prosthetic Laboratory in Dentistry: The Treatment Process from Clinic to Production

Prosthodontic treatments encompass procedures aimed at restoring the function and appearance of lost teeth or dental tissues. In this process, the examination and planning conducted in the clinic progress in connection with the design and production stages carried out in the laboratory. The presence of prosthetic production laboratories within Bahçeşehir University Oral and Dental Health Hospital also allows clinical treatment and production processes to be carried out within the same healthcare facility. In its 15,000 square metre indoor area, the hospital houses multidisciplinary dentistry clinics as well as prosthetic production laboratories.
In prosthodontic treatments, the process primarily begins with the evaluation of the patient's oral and dental structure and the planning of the treatment. Recording supporting tissues in fixed or removable prosthesis applications, determining the relationship between the jaws, and designing and manufacturing the prosthesis are among the fundamental stages. Today, these steps can be carried out using traditional methods, as well as being supported by digital technologies. Intraoral scanners, CAD software, and CAM systems can be used to transfer intraoral data into the digital environment, design the prosthesis, and manage the production process.
Data sharing between the clinic and the laboratory is an important part of this process. While impressions and models are physically transferred to the laboratory in the traditional workflow, intraoral scans can be directly transferred to the digital design environment in digital workflows. In digital models where the clinic and laboratory work together, patient data is acquired in the clinic, while the production of the prosthesis can be carried out by the laboratory or production centre. This structure brings together the dentist's clinical evaluation and the dental technician's role in the production process within the same treatment plan.
At Bahçeşehir University Oral and Dental Health Hospital, digital dentistry applications are part of the clinical infrastructure. While three-dimensional imaging systems and intraoral scanners are used at the hospital, it is stated that digital workflows integrated with CAD/CAM and artificial intelligence are also included in the technology infrastructure within the BAU Dental Campus. These systems create a working environment where digital data can be utilised in processes ranging from diagnosis and treatment planning to restorative and prosthodontic applications.
The presence of the prosthetics laboratory within the hospital allows the production stage to be carried out in close proximity to the clinical process. In the hospital's own promotional materials, it is stated that this setup is used to speed up the treatment process and support prosthesis production. Thus, the stages of examination, planning, impression or digital scanning, design, and production can be handled within a consecutive treatment chain.
In this respect, the prosthetics laboratory in dentistry does not remain merely a technical area where production is carried out. It represents one of the stages where clinical data is transformed into a viable restoration, where digital and traditional methods can come together, and where the collaboration between the clinician and the technician translates into concrete results. This connection between the clinic and the laboratory supports prosthodontic treatments being carried out in a holistic manner from planning to production.
